Casualty

I’ve spent most of the night in casualty with John as he somehow managed to stab himself this evening while making dinner. OK, he does use super-sharp chef knives, but even so. He was holding a frozen packet of Natto and trying to saw off a bit for himself – of course the knife went straight through the packet… and into his hand. Not straight through, thank goodness. But deep enough to make A LOT of blood, and to cause some nerve damage (could be temporary, but he’s having surgery on his hand tomorrow to find out).

John is not a great patient, as he panics… and panics me. But I managed to apply first aid fairly well (hand towels, compression and elevation) until the ambulance came. They checked him out and bandaged him up a bit. Then we discussed it with the ambulance officers, and decided it was going to be less expensive to get a taxi into the hospital, since we don’t have private health cover. John was in absolute agony (the possible nerve injury), but didn’t get any painkillers (panedeine forte) until about 10pm. They only started to take effect just as I left the hospital at about 12.30pm.

He’s going in for surgery some time tomorrow afternoon.
