I hate that our country is becoming progressively more right-wing, as demonstrated by the huge swing, nation-wide, to the Liberals in yesterday’s election.
Do Australians realise the consequences of this landslide Liberal win? God knows what legislation the Liberals will push through now that they hold the balance of power in the Senate. There is now nothing to stop Howard. Nothing.
Do people not understand that the independents, Greens and Democrats act as a check against one party having too much power? That Labour is in the unenviable position of almost certainly not being able to stop the worst of Howard’s right-wing agenda (ie. fulfilling the role that an opposition party is supposed to)? eg. Sale of Telstra, dismantling of medicare, industrial relations laws that favour employers over employees, toadying to the US, and I could go on.
Every Liberal member who has been on television since the election result became apparent has been unbelievably and unbearably smug.
We live in an era that nostalgises the Menzies era.
PS: John says that this isn’t John Howard’s fourth term. It’s the Fourth Reich!
