We have resolved that our annual visit to Marque has to become more frequent, so that we can sample something other than his always excellent winter menu. This year, however, was no dissappointment, particularly as Mark looks after us.

  • Hor D’oeuvres
    • The first one was the same little egg dish as last year. Still delicious.
    • The second one was a spicy green frothy tomato gazpacho, served in a little espresso cup. Suprisingly tasty.
  • First Course
    • John had very unusual dish; mullet in sea urchin custard with blood sausage. It’s not something I would have chosen, but John enjoyed it, “especially the blood sausage.”
    • I chose a truly scrumptuos pheasant terrine with foie gras. The terrine was individually moulded (as opposed to sliced from a larger mould). Yum!
  • Second Course
    • Although there were some great contendors for this course (squab with morrel mushrooms and a delicious sounding lamb dish) we both chose the venison cutlets served with roasted quince and a bitter chocolate tulle. Tender, juicy and unusual, it was an excellent choice.
  • Desert
    • In between our main and desert, Mark slipped us a Mandarin Sorbet from his degustation menu that had what we thought was a marscapone ice cream served with it.
    • John went for the Chocolate Fondant that I had last year.
    • I recalled that simple things are often the best and went for the apple tart. To describe this tart as heavenly would not be doing it justice; the slow cooked apple simply melted in my mouth, and the little drizzles of apple butter went perfectly with the vanilla ice cream.

And all that only set us back about $250!
