Vlad the Impaler/Bush the Displayer

I can understand that to achieve its military objectives (demoralise Saddam’s supporters, convince the rest of the world that they hadn’t falsified this bit of evidence) the US ‘had’ to display the bodies of Uday and Qusay on TV. But the question remains whether – morally, ethically and legally – they should have done it. (As an aside, could someone explain to me why it’s ‘legal’ for the US to display the bodies of the enemy on TV, but illegal for the Iraquis to do so?) When push comes to shove, is this any different to displaying an enemy’s head on a pike at the entrance to the city, or dragging the body of the enemy behind a chariot?
