Another description of depression

Once, early in my illness, my GP said that she had never fully understood the impact of depression until she read the first words of Malignant Sadness by Prof. Lewis Wolpert (who wrote this book after his own experience with depression):

It was the worst experience of my life. More terrible even than watching my wife die of cancer. I am ashamed to admit that my depression felt worse than her death but it is true.

The New York Times has an extract of the introduction and first chapter. It is worth reading.
