Photo Shoots and Fashion Concerns

I am currently on leave from work until 11/11, but it is not really a holiday. I am, instead, assisting John in the production of one of the components of his artwork for this year; a photograpic tableau. The shoot is on Friday, but most of the grunt work needs to be done beforehand; gathering props, getting costumes, etc. We spent most of Monday in the costume hire department of the ABC in Artarmon digging for a police uniform, a set of bush fire-fighter’s overalls and some sort of 70’s item for me to wear. The police uniform was easiest, but John had to go for police rescue overalls (white, not orange) but that’s OK.

The hardest thing was finding something that fit me. When John rang them in advance to find out whether they had plus-sized items in their 1970s range, they said that they did, but neglected to mention that the (very) few items they had (craftily hidden in between reams of size 8s) were hideous caftans or smocks. Let me tell you, even though I am usually pro-size acceptance, this knocked about my confidence, convictions and politics temporarily; I was reduced to humiliated tears. But I suppose caftans were what fat girls like me were once reduced to wearing on a daily basis…thank goodness groups like Don’t Tell Me What Size I Must B exist today to lobby the fashion industry.

Anyway, back on to the topic…

The scene John is creating is in a vaguely 1970s police station. Luckily, we already had most of the props we require; an old desk, some old desk accessories, an old phone and a fire extinguisher, among other things. We have borrowed a set of handcuffs from a friend of a friend, and bought an old Olivetti metal typewriter from a second-hand shop. Since we can use our loft as a studio (one of the reasons that we live here), John doesn’t have to hire a photographic studio and we can (and have) set the props up in advance.

So, at present things seem to be reasonably organised. I’ll let you know how things progress.
