We’ve made it out of The Vortex alive!

I need to make a confession. My partner John and I have a vice over which we have no control.

No, it’s not drugs or alcohol.

Its DVDs. Hundreds of them. All legit (not pirated). All obsessively catalogued.

We add to our collection in a variety of ways, but we have our preferred source (Hum in Newtown). We call it The Vortex, because we cannot drive through Newtown without at least feeling the intense pull of the place calling to us and our credit cards. It stocks DVDs that are interesting and sometimes hard to get (at least in Region 4 format, although our player can do multi-region).

Anyway, we fell into The Vortex today, and managed to come out with only 6 DVDs to add to the already large To Be Watched pile. Not to mention another 2 on order.

If you are interested, the purchases are listed below. NB: the links are to IMDB

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers

I’m looking forward to this one with Kirk Douglas and Barbara Stanwyck as the Femme Fatale. The tagline on the cover (‘FATE drew them together… and only MURDER could part them.’) hints at Noir-ish fabulousness to come.

A History of Violence

In this David Cronenberg film, Viggo Mortensen plays a man who has unsuccessfully tried to put his gangster past behind him. Saw this one in its theatrical release, but adding to our Cronenberg collection.

The Little Foxes

I’ve never seen this one, but I do like Bette Davis. It is described as an ‘angry comedy’ and was nominated for 9 Oscars. Should be good.

The Arena

This one is B-grade Pam Grier film with a skimpy plot and even skimpier outfits. A group of women are enslaved from across the Roman Empire and forced to be gladiators and fight for their lives in the arena.

City of Women

I’ve only seen this movie once before but I have good memories of it and generally enjoy Fellini movies.

Maadadayo

This was Akira Kurosawa’s last film, and that’s all I know about it really. (This was John’s selection, really)

The phrase “Cronenburg collection” makes me happy.

Netflix was the only thing that saved me and Ben from having our DVD collection grow far beyond our control. There’s a Hollywood Video near us that always has used DVDs on sale – usually at a rate of 3 for $25. Verra dangerous.

History of Violence was good… love the sex scene in that one! :) We’re DVD hoarders, too… and books… it’s bad!

Thanks Linday. We tried the rental thing and it didn’t work for us, being collectors at heart. I think we have most of the Cronenberg’s except Naked Lunch and the latest (Eastern Promises) and some of his really early stuff (pre The Brood).

Queen B, I hear what you are saying about books, too. I buy books as obsessively as I buy DVDs; I start to twitch if I haven’t bought a book in a week. My shelves are busting with them. I moved last year and had something like 40 or 50 boxes of books even after I had donated a third of them to a local Bookcrosser.

I’ll watch anything with Viggo Mortensen. He gets my 4 remaining hormones up & limping about. Please don’t tell me he’s gay.

Hope you enjoy your new stuff!

OMG! I am so there with you. I have way too many DVDs and I just entered them all into a spreadsheet database and reorganized all 200+ of them in alphabetical order so I could find them easier! I am in love with my new DVD spreadsheet catalog too! I feel so organized! Now I need to tackle my CDs, books and computer software! I’ll never finish, but it feels great that I got the DVDs done at least. Yummy! :)
